A submission to an international competition for a new theatre for Perth in the Northbridge district, CentreStage was seen as the last chance to reconcile the 80's 'Monoliths' of the Perth Cultural Centre precinct with the small scale urban texture of Northbridge. Focusing on the creation of a New Monolith the project proposes the two theatres (Main and flat floor) are tightly packed together to form a strong, singular object which matches the scale of the adjacent Library and Gallery.
Clad in rough-sawn limestone it is the intention that the New Monolith and particularly its fly tower are viewed as an immediate engagement with the long silhouette of the Perth skyline.
The ambition of this proposal is to 'Stitch' the Cultural Centre into Northbridge. Conceived as strategic architectural devices the 'Building Stitch' and 'Urban Stich' seek to break down the scale of the New Monolith without removing its strength and to adhere the Theatre into the existing context through program and circulation.
The 'Building Stitch' moves East-West across the New Monolith slicing as it progresses, carving and removing pieces of the form. Conceptually a steel plate it excavates voids allowing public occupation around the core theatre functional volumes. The 'Urban Stitch' traverses the site in a North South direction, a recycled timber volume this stitch intersects the 'Building Stitch' flipping vertically to form the walls to a long east west atrium know as the 'Cultural Mall'.
This tall spine forms the main circulation through the theatre linking it vertically to the Cultural Centre Plaza and laterally through to William St.
