Rockingham Youth Centre is a conversion of a 1960's St John Ambulance
Building into a mixed use facility that incorporates a teaching
cafe/restaurant, an internet cafe, drop-in centre, artists studios and
an enclosed performance space and band practice rooms.
The facility is located in the hart of Rockingham, a small coastal town
80km south of Perth.
The centre is seen as a place that unites the youth of Rockingham with
the downtown residents and seeks to provide local youth with a positive
public face and a strong place in the community.
The form of the building is extroverted- combining the curved forms of
the "drum" performance area, with a giant Swiss cheese roof that
exploits the mild Maritime climate and downtown location. An adjacent
power transformer enclosure is sheathed in a 8m fabric wind-sock onto
which events images are projected at night.
